About Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Ltd (KAMS) is the peak regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Established in 1986, KAMS was formed to provide a unified voice for Aboriginal health and well-being, and to deliver centralised resources and collective advocacy in partnership with its Member Services. KAMS is governed by a Board of Directors made up of Aboriginal health leaders from across its Member Services.

Our vision is that all Kimberley Aboriginal people are empowered to be strong, healthy, and connected through Aboriginal community-controlled services.  Our purpose is to deliver holistic health and well-being outcomes in partnership with Aboriginal-led organisations, centred around Aboriginal culture and knowledge.

KAMS is a proud member of the Aboriginal Health Council of WA (AHCWA), the Council of Aboriginal Services Western Australia (CASWA), and the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).

Position Overview

The Aboriginal Care Coordinator will be based in Broome on a Full-time basis. You will play a vital role in establishing and implementing effective care coordination services for Aboriginal patients managing chronic renal disease. This position involves providing education about renal health, assisting clients in accessing necessary services, and advocating for their rights within the healthcare system.

With a focus on cultural sensitivity, the Care Coordinator will engage with clients in their homes, work collaboratively with healthcare teams, and develop strategies to enhance access to mainstream primary health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Liaises with other KRS Aboriginal Care Coordinators as required to support renal clients and their families.
  • Educate patients in regards to managing their own healthcare needs.
  • Undertake health promotion activities to increase awareness and understanding of renal disease and its effects.
  • Provide a link between Aboriginal clients and Renal Heal Centre Staff. 

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to promoting health equity and cultural sensitivity in Aboriginal health. You will possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

  • Must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Ability to engage effectively with Indigenous communities and understand their diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organisational skills with a focus on record-keeping.
  • Willingness to learn and participate in ongoing career development.
  • Ability to advocate for clients and navigate the healthcare system.
  • Valid 'C' class licence (Manual Licence) is required.
  • Desirable: Previous experience in a health setting and sound computer skills.

Salary & Benefits

The base salary for this position is $85,126 per annum pro rata. Additional benefits include: 

  • accommodation allowance of $7,800 per annum pro rata
  • annual airfare of $1,285 per annum after 12 months of service
  • option for salary sacrifice up to $30,000 per annum pro rata.
